The True and the Beautiful

Few places bring science and art together as directly and on such equal footing as the modern planetarium.

This unique convergence serves as the starting point for SpherIcon, an event that focuses on the relationship between these two great spheres of human creativity. Held across the Kunstmuseum Bochum and the planetarium’s star theater, the event brings together scientists, artists, and philosophers to offer insights into this dynamic interplay from diverse perspectives.

Lectures, discussions, and immersive presentations illustrate how the „true and the beautiful“ manifest in images, data, and spaces. SpherIcon serves as a forum for exchange and collaboration—and as an invitation not merely to conceptualize knowledge, but to see and experience it.

VENUE:
The Bochum Planetarium is one of the most visited planetariums in Europe. It is located near the Ruhrstadion on the northeastern edge of Bochum's city center in the Ruhr region. Built in 1964, it was the first large-scale planetarium in Germany to be constructed in the post-war era. The planetarium's program includes scientific lectures, presentations on astronomical and other topics, and shows for children. It also hosts popular artistic events, such as concerts and musical performances, beneath the starry dome. More than 2,400 events take place there annually. The 300,000-visitor mark has frequently been surpassed; in 2024, the Bochum Planetarium welcomed approximately 350,000 visitors.
